Super Steep and a Line of Skis

The weather is changing and along with the crisp cool in the air comes the smell of fall, I love that smell. It's back to school, fleece jackets and jeans, great morning hikes and the sound of lonely honking of geese as they fly over in the morning. The Bitterroot Mountains stand ready for the snow that will come.

For some the fall signifies the start of another chance to stock the freezer with fresh meat. For me it harkens another ski season. I walk by my rack of skis and carefully look over their shape. Undoubtedly my daughters have grown enough again that they will need to find new ski for themselves. They are getting close to being at the end of their growth and I can admit I am happy for that in this instance.

Along with the ski evaluation I think over the changes in my life this last year. I know most go through this process around the new-year but not I. It's ski season that that rest of the year circles around. I sold my 12-year-old business in this last cycle. My husband and partner continue to remind me that although we didn't get rich we did sell it during a recession. That's cool for sure but it was still hard making the decision and moving forward after the decision was made. Not unlike standing on a super steep making that first turn and following the line the rest of the way.

I hear over and over how much the world has changed in the last few seasons and it has. The power shifts and money exchange, government partisan plays along with environmental concerns and humanitarian crisis. I know it's changed and you know it's changed. I am not a Pollyanna nor do I stick my head in the sand. I walk my line of skis. I walk my line of ski and I know that there will be more changes for myself and for the world. I know I will tune my skis for another year. I will sell my daughters' old skis and get them new ones. I know my boots will make do for another year and theirs won't. These are certain.

I know I will stand on the top of many new super steeps this season and make that first turn and follow the line. And today I will snuggle into my fleece jacket, have some hot tea, help organize school supplies and hope I hear the geese in the morning.
